Florida added 21,800 jobs to the labor market last month, according to new workforce data released Friday.

The jobs gained in August represent a 0.2% increase over the month, according to the report from Florida Commerce, which releases workforce statistics each month.

Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down slightly last month, decreasing from 4.6% in July to 4.5% in August. Meanwhile, the national seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.1% in August.

August’s job gains came as the state saw an overall increase of 59,000 jobs over the year. That’s up 0.6% compared to the 0.4% increase in jobs nationally during that same time period.

In total, there were 502,000 Floridians who did not have jobs last month out of the state’s labor force of 11,115,000, according to the report.

Six of Florida’s ten major industries enjoyed over-the-year growth. Leading the way was the education and health services sector which gained 39,600 jobs – a 2.5% increase. Professional and business services saw an increase of 25,200 jobs. Leisure and hospitality added 11,600 jobs, manufacturing grew by 2,300 jobs, construction added 2,100 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities grew by 1,800 jobs.

However, some industries saw their job opportunities shrink over the year. That included financial activities which lost 14,300 jobs – a 2.1% decrease. Total government jobs dropped by 4,900. The information sector shrunk by 3,900 jobs and other services dropped by 900 jobs, the report showed.

Location played a role in how Floridans experienced the labor market. Last month, Miami-Dade County boasted the state’s lowest not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.7% followed by Monroe County at 3.3% and Wakulla County at 4.1%.

On the high end was Taylor County which saw its unemployment rate at 8.2% in August. Sumter County had the second highest not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 7.9% followed by Highlands County at 6.8%.

Far more metro areas in Florida saw over-the-year job gains versus losses. Only four metro areas lost jobs over the year in August, the report found. The areas that saw the biggest job losses were Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Sunrise. The Pensacola, Ferry Pass and Brent areas had the second largest job losses last month.

The areas with the largest job gains were Tampa, which added 12,500 jobs, and the Orlando, Kissimmee, and Sanford area which added 11,900 jobs. Other areas experiencing significant job growth were the Miami, Miami Beach and Kendall area which grew by 6,200 jobs and the West Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Delray Beach areas which added 4,800 jobs.

Statistics for September will be released in October.
