New poll shows Democrat support for Supreme Court down, while Republican support higher
Fewer people have faith in the Supreme Court, compared to just a few months ago, poll shows
Fewer people have faith in the U.S. Supreme Court than just a few months ago, according to a recently released Marquette Law School Poll.
The polls released Wednesday shows a 10% drop in support for the highest court in the country.
The sharp decline in approval in May includes a drop of 23 percentage points among Democrats and a 6-point fall among independents. However, approval rose by 4 percentage points among Republicans.
"Compared to the results in March, approval of the Court is more sharply polarized along party lines than it was two months ago,” pollsters wrote.
The shift coincides with the recent leak of the draft opinion by the court's conservative majority that would effective reverse the court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that gives women the constitutional right to an abortion.
The Marquette Poll shows, unsurprisingly, that Democrats have lost the most faith with the Supreme Court.
Sixty-eight percent of Republicans support the court in the new poll, compared to 64% in March. Twenty-six percent of Democrat were in support, compared to 49% in the previous one.
Pollsters said that while support for the court has changed dramatically, the opinion about Roe has not.
"Among those with an opinion on the issue, 31% favor overturning Roe, while 69% oppose striking it down, hardly changed since March when 32% were in favor and 68% were opposed,” pollsters wrote.
The new poll also shows 65% of Republicans want Roe overturned, compared to 6% of Democrats.
