Colorado Dem Gov signs four major gun control bills, raises age requirements, tightens Red Flag laws
The new laws, according to Colorado Democrats, are aimed to decrease suicides and youth violence and stop mass shootings.
Colorado Democrat Gov. Jared Polis signed four gun control bills Friday.
Colorado Democrats say the new laws are intended to decrease suicides and youth violence, stop mass shootings and allowing victims of such killings to sue the firearms industry, according to the Associated Press.
"Coloradoans deserve to be safe in our communities, in our schools, in our grocery stores, in our nightclubs," Polis said in signing the legislation.
The bills include raising the age to buy a gun from 18 to 21 and requiring a three-day waiting period – from the time of purchase until taking possession of the gun.
Taylor Rhodes, the executive director of the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, filed a lawsuit against the new measures, focusing on the age increase.
"This is simply bigoted politicians doing what bigoted politicians do: discriminating against an age,” Rhodes said, according to the Associated Press.
The measures also strengthen Colorado's red flag law, allowing a judge to temporarily remove someone’s gun if the person is a threat to themselves or others.
