NYC Mayor Eric Adams to meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago resort on Friday
Although the meeting is expected to focus on illegal immigration, Adams' critics voiced concern that the mayor would also ask Trump for a pardon in his federal corruption case as he seeks reelection later this year.
Embattled Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams will meet with President-elect Donald Trump on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the mayor's spokesman confirmed Thursday.
Adams has previously expressed interest in meeting with Trump and his administration to get federal assistance with a surge of illegal immigrants that have flooded the city during the Biden administration. He previously met with Trump's incoming border czar Tom Homan to discuss the migrant crisis, and met with another Trump ally on Tuesday, according to Politico.
Fabian Levy, the mayor's spokesman, said Adams believes that meeting with Trump will be the best way to help the city.
“Mayor Adams has made quite clear his willingness to work with President-elect Trump and his incoming administration on behalf of New Yorkers — and that partnership with the federal government is critical to New York City’s success," Levy told the outlet. “The mayor looks forward to having a productive conversation with the incoming president on how we can move our city and country forward."
Although the meeting is expected to focus on illegal immigration and other issues facing New Yorkers, Adams' critics voiced concern that the mayor would also ask Trump for a pardon in his federal corruption case as he seeks reelection later this year.
“Who is this meeting for, New Yorkers or Eric Adams?” former City Comptroller Scott Stringer, who is challenging Adams in the Democratic primary, asked on X. “Our city has too many problems right now for us to worry about if he’s fighting for New Yorkers or a hypothetical pardon for himself.”
Adams has denied any wrongdoing in the corruption case and claimed he was the victim of political lawfare. Trump previously said he would consider pardoning the mayor, who faces federal bribery, conspiracy, and campaign finance charges.
