Federal judge approves a redrawn Georgia congressional map by GOP-controlled legislature

A federal judge on Thursday approved a congressional map that was redrawn by the Georgia GOP-controlled state legislature.

The original map contained voting lines that were found to have violated the federal voting rights law.

The General Assembly and Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp had until Dec. 8 to adopt new redistricting plans. 

U.S. District Judge Steve Jones wrote in his order that the General Assembly had "fully complied" with his order in October that required creation of a majority-black congressional district in western metro Atlanta, CBS News reports.

He also approved the maps for state Senate and House districts. He had ruled against the old ones because he found they were created in a racially discriminatory manner.

The lawmakers drew the new majority-black district in portions of Cobb, Douglas, and Fulton Counties.
