Bird said that the series of criminal cases that have been levied against the former president were not actually about crimes, and were more attempts to stop him from becoming president again.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird led a group of other Republican attorneys general this week in calling for an end to political prosecutions, and the "lawfare" directed at President-elect Donald Trump.

Bird and the 22 other attorneys general sent a letter to special counsel Jack Smith, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis regarding their prosecutions, and urged them to drop their cases in order to avoid a "Constitutional crisis."

The letter comes after the Justice Department reportedly indicated it was winding down two of its criminal cases against Trump ahead of his second administration.

Bird said that the series of criminal cases that have been levied against the former president were not actually about crimes, and were more attempts to stop him from becoming president again. However, Trump was elected back to the White House last week.

"He is innocent. He didn't do anything wrong, and those cases never should have been brought in the first place," she told Fox News. "That was another way they were trying to wage campaign lawfare."

Attorneys from Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia signed Bird's letter.

"President of the United States is the most important job in the world," they wrote. "The President leads the free world. And America just gave President Trump a mandate to lead the United States to a brighter future. Prosecutions aimed at 'self-promotion' are at no time appropriate."

James, whose office led several cases against Trump, has doubled down on her promise to continue prosecuting Trump, despite his move to the Oval Office in January.
