At least 20 dead and hundreds injured by storms sweeping through southwest
Forecasters reported Monday that the storms could shift east and impact states such as New York and Alabama.
Storms sweeping across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas have left hundreds injured and at least 20 dead over the long Memorial Day weekend.
The north Dallas area and the northwest corner of Arkansas had the most damage, according to The Associated Press.
Forecasters reported Monday that the storms could shift east and impact states such as New York and Alabama.
Arkansas GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed in a news conference on Sunday that eight people have died as a result of the storms.
"While we are seeing the devastation of businesses and homes across this area in the northern part of our state, we are seeing the great humanity of Arkansans and neighbors helping neighbors even when their own homes and businesses are damaged," Sanders said during the conference.
There have been seven deaths reported in Cooke County, Texas, with two of them being children.
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said that first responders are working to help with the damage.
"Texas is grateful for the heroic first responders and volunteers who responded to this great tragedy," he wrote on the social media platform, X. "Our hearts go out to all families who lost loved ones to these devastating tornadoes."
