NAACP slams DeSantis, Florida universities for eliminating DEI programs
Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation last year prohibiting state funds going to any DEI programs.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) criticized Florida universities for eliminating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs.
"This is not simply about sports; it's about acknowledging and advocating for the rights and supports of Black students within educational environments," the NAACP wrote in a Monday letter.
Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation last year prohibiting state funds going to any DEI programs.
Earlier this month, the University of Florida eliminated DEI positions and programs in response to state guidance. The University of North Florida and Florida International have also shut down DEI programs, according to the Associated Press.
The letter also urged black students to " reconsider any potential decision to attend, and compete at a predominantly white institution in the state of Florida," because of the state's DEI rules.
“While it is our duty to spread awareness and encourage action around these egregious assaults, we also recognize that protest can come at a price,” the letter continues. “The sad reality is, for many Black student-athletes, collegiate sports may be their sole opportunity at achieving the upward mobility necessary to propel them into their rightful places in society.”
NAACP National Board of Directors Chairman Leon W. Russell and NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson signed the letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker.
