New Jersey sues Trump admin to stop ICE detention facility from opening in state
The detention facility, which will be a warehouse that the administration converted to a housing site, is expected to hold up to 1,500 migrants. The administration purchased the warehouse in Roxbury last month for $129 million.
New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill sued the Trump administration Friday in an attempt to block it from building a major immigrant detention facility in the local town of Roxbury.
The detention facility, which will be a warehouse that the administration converted to a housing site, is expected to hold up to 1,500 migrants. The administration purchased the warehouse in Roxbury last month for $129 million.
Sherrill announced the lawsuit in a press conference, focusing more on the environmental risks and concerns over public safety than her opposition to the administration's immigration policies, according to Politico.
“It would divert emergency resources, it would displace potential housing and disrupt growth,” she said. “It’s the kind of poorly thought out, chaotic idea that all too often comes from the Trump administration.”
The lawsuit argues that the facility is better equipped for Amazon packages and as a logistics center than housing people, highlighting how the building currently has just four toilets, which is just a fraction of what would be needed to hold up to 1,500 migrants.
The lawsuit also accuses the Trump administration of violating the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires the federal government to alleviate any environmental harms, the Intergovernmental Cooperation and Administrative Procedure Acts and the Immigrant and Nationality Act.
President Donald Trump's new Homeland Security Secretary nominee Markwayne Mullin, a GOP senator from Oklahoma, said he would visit the facility before it opens to address concerns if he is confirmed.
