Adams said the city would still offer illegal immigrants sanctuary if they abide by U.S. law in every other way, but that migrants who commit violent crimes would be deported.

New York City's Democratic Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday said that he will work with President-elect Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan to deport illegal immigrants in his city who have committed violent crimes.

Adams and Homan met for the first time on Thursday, and the mayor previously expressed interest in working with the incoming Trump administration to help New York handle its influx of illegal immigrants. Adams pleaded for help from the Biden administration, which largely went unanswered.

The Democrat said the city would still offer illegal immigrants sanctuary if they abide by U.S. law in every other way, but that migrants who commit violent crimes would be deported, the Associated Press reported.

“We’re not going to be a safe haven for those who commit repeated violent crimes against innocent migrants, immigrants and longstanding New Yorkers," Adams told reporters at a press conference. "That was my conversation today with the border czar, to figure out how to go after those individuals who are repeatedly committing crimes in our city."

Adams said the non-violent illegal immigrants will still be able to access the city's resources like education, healthcare, and shelter.

Homan has not released a public statement on the meeting so far. But Homan said earlier this week that Trump's massive deportation plan will begin in Chicago in January, per CBS News.
