New York Gov. Hochul signs law mandating panic buttons in retail stores
The law will go into effect in 180 days.
Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law that requires large retail stores in the Big Apple to have panic buttons to protect employees.
“Retail workers are on the front lines every day, keeping our economy moving and supporting their communities,” Hochul said in a statement, according to The Hill. “From increasing penalties for assaulting a retail worker to signing the Retail Worker Safety Act, I’m committed to keeping our frontline workers safe.”
The law enjoys support from unions that represent retail industry workers, according to Reuters.
The legislation will take effect in 180 days.
Stores in New York City over the past couple of years have closed due to crime and theft.
Some retail stores such as Walmart have objected to the mandate, arguing it would result in false alarms.
