Republican legislators in Kansas receive letters with white powder, spurring alarm
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation put out a statement saying that the situation is being investigated.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation confirms that about 100 GOP legislators in the state were sent “cryptic” letters containing white powder.
While no motive has been confirmed yet, some speculate that it is politically motivated due to Republicans overriding Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's recent vetoes.
“This is not okay,” Republican State Rep. Tory Marie Blew, who received a letter, wrote in a Facebook post. “I don’t know all the details, but as of now only Republicans [sic] legislators have received this package.”
The KBI put out a statement over the weekend saying that the situation is being investigated.
“Law enforcement is working to safely collect the letters and investigate the incidents,” the KBI said in its statement. “Currently, no injuries have been reported, but we ask everyone to remain vigilant in handling mail.”
According to an ABC report, the substances in the letters have been tested and they are not explosives or biohazards.
The Republican Attorney General and House Speaker were among those who received letters, and no Democrats have reported receiving any letters as of this weekend, KMBC reports.
