Twenty five train cars derail in Chicago suburb
A spokesperson with the Canadian National Railway said approximately 25 train cars unexpectedly derailed in Matteson, Illinois. No injuries have been reported in the incident so far, and the scene has since been secured.
A large train carrying liquified petroleum gas derailed Thursday in a suburb outside of a Chicago.
A spokesperson with the Canadian National Railway said about 25 train cars derailed in Matteson, Illinois.
There have so far been been no reports of injuries or a major gas leak.
Officials originally told residents and businesses to prepare for a "long-term" evacuation, but the order has since been lifted except for properties adjacent to the crash site, according to USA Today.
"One railcar containing residue Liquified Petroleum Gas leaked a limited amount of product. The product has since been contained, and there is no danger to public safety," the Canadian National Railway spokesperson told the outlet. "CN is working closely with local officials and thanks first responders for their work."
The cause of the derailment is not clear, but officials were seen examining a leaking railway car.
The derailment comes the same week that the National Transportation Security Board (NTSB) issued its final report on the massive train derailment outside of East Palestine, Ohio last year. The cause of that crash was identified as a hot railcar wheel bearing sparking a fire.
