Virginia Democrats are moving forward with a constitutional amendment to redraw their state congressional district lines as part of a broader battle between the major parties to gain an edge for the midterms.

The House of Delegates advanced the amendment in a 51-42 vote on Wednesday, The Hill reported. Should it become law, it would permit Virginia to redraw its maps should another state do so outside of the usual 10-year cycle.

The Democrats are expected to perform well in Virginia's off-year elections in November and could be well positioned to draw a map favorable to their party.

The move comes as GOP-leaning states such as Texas have redrawn their maps at the urgings of President Donald Trump. Republicans currently enjoy a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
