Amid criticism, Instagram CEO vows that 'more and more' of photo site will pivot to videos
Company has been slammed for moving away from photo-centric social media
Photo-based social media website Instagram will continue to place a growing emphasis on videos on its platform, the company's CEO said in an address this week aimed at stifling criticism of the website's changing priorities.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri addressed those concerns in a video posted to multiple social media sites on Tuesday. Multiple high-profile individuals including Kim Kardashian have criticized the website—known for its often dreamlike, high-quality user-posted photo streams—for relying more and more on quick, punchy video clips like those found on TikTok.
Mosseri in the video said that while Instagram will "continue to support photos," nevertheless "more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time."
"We see this even if we change nothing. We see this even if you just look at chronological feed," he argued, promising that the country intended to "lean into that shift while supporting photos.”
Instagram is owned by Meta, the parent company to Facebook headed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Mosseri previously served as a designer at Facebook before assuming the role of Instagram's head.
