With the transition on Wednesday from the Trump administration to the Biden administration, there also was a digital transition of power on Twitter as the social media platform shifted several accounts over to the new administration.

"First, Twitter will transfer current institutional accounts to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) where the Tweets and account history will remain publicly available and the account usernames will be updated to reflect their archived status," Twitter explained in a post earlier this month. "For example, the Trump administration's @POTUS account will be publicly archived as @POTUS45, just as the Obama administration's account was archived as @POTUS44."

Twitter explained in the post earlier this month that, "@Transition46 will become @WhiteHouse, @PresElectBiden will become @POTUS, @SenKamalaHarris will become @VP, @FLOTUSBiden will become @FLOTUS, and @PressSecPsaki will become @PressSec. The Tweets, account history, and followers will transition between these accounts."

"These institutional accounts will not automatically retain the followers from the prior administration," Twitter said. "People on Twitter who previously followed institutional White House Twitter accounts, or who currently follow relevant Biden or Harris Twitter accounts, will receive in-app alerts and other prompts that will notify them about the archival process, as well as give them the option to follow the new administration's Twitter accounts."

Kamala Harris became the nation's first female vice president on Wednesday, and Twitter has created a new @SecondGentleman account which will be available for her husband, the nation's first-ever second gentleman.

Donald Trump heavily utilized his @realdonaldtrump account on Twitter both before and during his presidency, but the company "permanently suspended" that account earlier in January while Trump was still serving out the final days of his term. Shortly after the suspension, when Trump posted on the @POTUS account, Twitter removed the new tweets he had shared on that account.
