Twitter's Community Notes fact checks CBP claim on migrant travel

Twitter's Community Notes includes a fact-check of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection claim that the federal government does not financially assist migrants or provide them with free travel.

"NOTICE: Claims that migrants will be provided free travel and transportation to their destination are false. The U.S. government does not provide help or financial support for noncitizens," CBP tweeted last week. 

Community Notes, or context added to posts by Twitter users, states below the CBP tweet: "This statement by CBP is misleading as the federal government funds non-government organizations such as Catholic charities to assist in the travel, food, and shelter for illegal aliens and is coordinated by [the Federal Emergency Management Agency]."

The additional context also includes links addressing the CBP's claim, such as a post from reporter Rebecca Brannon who said: "Migrants have their travel coordinated with NGO’s [sic] like Catholic charities with the help from the federal government. I witnessed firsthand in Brownsville [Texas] the countless bus and flight tickets issued ... after being processed."

It also directs users to a webpage for FEMA's Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which shows that the agency has awarded $332.5 million in funding for organizations to provide food, shelter and services to migrants.
