Trump slams 'very suspect' referee who gave Balogun red card
"I saw the play," he said. "And that wasn't a foul, that wasn't even an infraction. That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other."
President Donald Trump on Monday had harsh words for the referee who issued a red card to U.S. player Folarin Balogun after FIFA suspended his one-game ban.
Balogun received a red card during the U.S. match against Bosnia-Hercegovina. Trump later contacted the head of FIFA and urged them to review the penalty. FIFA ultimately allowed Balogun to play for the upcoming match against Belgium.
"Yes, I asked for a review by FIFA," Trump confirmed.
"I saw the play," he said. "And that wasn't a foul, that wasn't even an infraction. That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other."
"These were two great athletes that got tangled up and this referee, who is a little bit suspect, if you check his past... very suspect," he added. "He made a call that nobody could believe."
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has since appealed the decision to allow Balogun to play.
