Abbott designates CAIR as a terrorist organization
The organization is well known as a public advocate against discrimination and Islamophobia, though critics have charged that it defends terrorist activities.
Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, this week officially designated the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as terrorist organizations, authorizing the state attorney general to pursue legal action against them.
"Today, I designated the Muslim Brotherhood and Council on American-Islamic Relations as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations," Abbott said.
"
This bans them from buying or acquiring land in Texas and authorizes the Attorney General to sue to shut them down."
Abbott's decree cited FBI determinations in asserting that CAIR was founded as a front group for Hamas, the Gaza-based terrorist group.
The organization is well known as a public advocate against discrimination and Islamophobia, though critics have charged that it defends terrorist activities.
The governor's declaration has no reflection on federal policy and is limited to its implications for the state of Texas.
