Adams skeptical of Cuomo mayoral bid rumors
Adams, for his part, suggested that Cuomo was likely exploring potential paths for a political comeback after resigning in 2021.
New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has expressed doubt that former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo will mount a mayoral bid in the near future.
Reports emerged last week that Cuomo was exploring a potential bid to lead the Big Apple in the event that Adams saw his political prospects fade over an ongoing FBI investigation, a sexual assault suit, and a migration surge with which he has struggled to contend.
Adams, for his part, suggested that Cuomo was likely exploring potential paths for a political comeback after resigning in 2021, saying in a radio interview with La Mega 97.9 on Monday that "We talk often. I don’t see him running for mayor."
"I think he is looking at his next political move and there is a lot of things he can look at, but I have to be ready to run New York and that is what I’m focused on doing right now," he added, according to Politico.
Cuomo's resignation came amid mounting scrutiny of his alleged sexual harassment of his political aides. One alleged victim, former aide Brittany Commisso, has since filed a suit against him.
Adams, for his part, was accused in a suit last week of sexual assault in 1993, Politico reported. He has further seen his popularity fall amid the ongoing FBI probe into his campaign allegedly coordinating with the Turkish government to receive illegal foreign donations. Adams has not personally faced allegations of wrongdoing in that case, though the FBI seized his phones earlier this month as part of the investigation.
Adding to Adams' woes was a recent decision to cut the budget for policing and city services as the city struggles to accommodate the influx of new arrivals. More than 110,000 illegals have come to the Big Apple over the past year.
