Olympic organizers working with Trump administration on pre-Summer Games golf tournament
The unofficial event would be a "pro-am" tournament with professionals teamed up with amateur golfers.
The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee is working with the Trump administration to put on a golf tournament that would be held prior to the Summer Games.
Amateur golfers would team up with professionals in what's usually called a "pro-am" tournament. The event isn't planned as an official Olympic event, Politico reported.
The Olympics are organized by local and international sports organizations, but the staging of the competitions requires extensive federal involvement, including security, transportation, and immigration and visa processing for athletes and visitors.
California lawmakers and the Los Angeles public transit system have requested $2 billion in transportation funding from the federal government, and the House Appropriations Committee has approved $875 million for Olympic operations so far.
