President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met Monday to discuss affordability in the Big Apple and immigration, including Trump's decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitian and Syrian immigrants.

The meeting took place while the president is in the city for the United Nations' General Assembly, where he is expected to speak on Tuesday.

The two leaders said they had a wide-ranging conversation on affordability and immigration, including constructing an affordable housing project called Sunnyside Yard, which would be built in Queens. The project would create 12,000 or more homes, according to the New York Times.

“I can tell you that Sunnyside’s a big job — I’ve been watching that for 35 years,” Trump told reporters. “Everybody’s wanted to do something with Sunnyside Yards — well, we met at the White House a couple of times, the mayor brought that up, the possibility of doing Sunnyside Yards. It’s a very, I would say, that was a very federal-oriented job.”

Mamdani said that he stands by his decision to invite Trump to Gracie Mansion, claiming that he was committed to working with anyone who would help the city and it's residents.

“I committed over the course of the campaign, as well as while being in office, that I would meet with anyone, work with anyone that could deliver for New Yorkers,” he said, adding that conversations about “potentially building 12,000 homes, about the importance of our Haitian neighbors here in this city are conversations that are worthwhile to have.”

The meeting comes despite stark political differences between the leaders, but the pair have generally enjoyed an amicable public relationship. As a former New Yorker, Trump has repeatedly wished Mamdani well, hoping that he could improve the city. Mamdani, in turn, visited the White House after winning office in what appeared to be a cordial visit.

Trump praised Mamdani after the meeting Monday, stating that he hopes the Democratic socialist will be a "great" mayor.
