President Donald Trump on Tuesday pardoned Ross Ulbricht, founder of the online marketplace Silk Road, who received a sentence of life imprisonment a decade ago.

"I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbricht to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross," Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday. "The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!"

Trump had promised to pardon Ulbricht during the Libertarian National Convention last May, Fox News reported. Libertarians have advocated for Ulbricht's release because they believe government investigators overreached in the case against Silk Road.

The online marketplace was founded in 2011 and used cryptocurrency payments. Ulbricht was convicted in 2015 on seven counts related to the site because Silk Road was used to sell illegal drugs, though he didn't sell them himself.

“Ross Ulbricht has been a libertarian political prisoner for more than a decade,” Libertarian National Committee Chair Angela McArdle said in a statement on Tuesday, according to The Hill. "I’m proud to say that saving his life has been one of our top priorities and that has finally paid off."
