President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he plans to hold a national day of prayer on the National Mall in May, which is intended to "rededicate America as one nation under God," as part of the year-long America 250 birthday celebration.

Trump made the announcement during an appearance at the National Prayer Breakfast, where he also touted his administration's efforts to bring religion back to public life, while still abiding by the Constitution.

The president said the prayer event will take place on May 17, and extended the invitation to gather for the event to all Americans.

"We're going to rededicate America as one nation under God," Trump said. "Some major politicians refuse to say the word God. They don’t want to say it. I say it. There are many signs that religion is coming back. It's coming back so strong. You know, your churches are filling up. You didn't have that two years ago."

The event will be hosted by Freedom250, which is a subsidiary of the National Park Foundation that is organizing events marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

Other pivotal events with Freedom250 include the Great American Farmer's Market, hosted by the Department of Agriculture, in August, and the Great American State Fair in June that will take place on the National Mall. A full list of events can be found here.
