Trump urges America to settle differences peacefully after gunman targets another of his events
Trump said he would not be deterred from attending the dinner when it is rescheduled and praised law enforcement from stopping the lone gunman from California before he could cause others harm.
President Donald Trump on Saturday night shrugged off another shooting incident targeting an event he was attending, imploring Americans to settle their differences peacefully after a lone gunman disrupted the annual White House correspondent's dinner where the nation's leaders were in attendance,
Still dressed in his tuxedo from the event, Trump said he would not be deterred from attending the dinner when it is rescheduled and praised law enforcement from stopping the lone gunman from California before he could cause others harm.
Trump, who survived two assassination attempts during his campaign in 2024, said being president “is a very dangerous profession. … I can’t imagine that there is any profession that is more dangerous.”
“I like not to think about it,” Trump said when asked how assassination attacks impact him, adding that “I think I handle it about as well as it can be handled. … I do it for the country.”
The president added, “I want to live because I want to make this country great.”
Trump said he believed the horrific event had brought he and the media closer together and “I ask that all Americans commit with their hearts to resolving our differences peacefully.”
Trump said the gunman "charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons” about 50 yards from the ballroom,.
"This thug that attacked our Constitution.” Trump said: “They seem to think he was a lone wolf, and I feel that too. … My impression is he was a lone wolf whack job. … These are crazy people, and they have to be dealt with.”
Trump said that the shooter was from California and that the president believed law enforcement was already going through the man’s apartment.
“One officer was shot but saved by the fact that he was wearing a very good bullet proof vest,” Trump said, adding that “I just spoke with the officer and he is doing great … We told him that we love him and respect him”
Trump said that the Washington Hilton where the night’s event was being held was “not a particularly secure building” and said threats like this were part of why the White House needed the new ballroom that he is constructing.
“We need the ballroom — that’s why the military and the Secret Service are demanding it,” the president said.
