Amid surge in support for Dhillon, RNC Chair McDaniel nabs major endorsement
McDaniel has come under fire in recent months following a disappointing showing for the party in the November 2022 midterms.
Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has received a major endorsement from a top GOP donor as she faces mounting support for her opponent, Harmeet Dhillon.
GOP megadonor Elizabeth Uihlein endorsed McDaniel to keep her post in a letter to the 168 RNC members who will decide the next chair, according to the Washington Times. Uihlein has donated tens of millions to the GOP and conservative causes in years past.
"I have been intimately involved in Republican politics my entire life, and I have carefully observed the Republican National Committee‘s operations over the past 6 years. With full confidence, I endorse Ronna McDaniel for another term as Chairwoman," Uihlein wrote to the committee members. "There is no question Ronna McDaniel is the right person for the job."
McDaniel has come under fire in recent months following a disappointing showing for the party in the November 2022 midterms. Pollsters had predicted a red wave and likely GOP control of both chambers, though the party only barely managed to take control of the House.
Both MyPillow Founder Mike Lindell and conservative lawyer Harmeet Dhillon are vying to oust McDaniel. Dhillon has thus far had considerable success in securing endorsements from major GOP donors. McDaniel, meanwhile, has touted the support of 107 RNC voting members, enough to secure another term.
Former President Donald Trump has declined to make an endorsement in the contest.
