Arkansas Gov. Sanders signs law permitting anti-abortion monument at state Capitol
The "monument to the unborn" will be a privately funded project and anti-abortion groups will have input on the final design.
Arkansas Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has approved a law permitting the creation of a monument at the state Capitol marking the number of abortions that were performed in the state before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which established a constitutional right to the procedure.
While the monument will recognize the number of abortions performed, its final form remains undetermined. The law requires the Capitol Arts and Grounds Commission to choose an artist and oversee the monument's design, Politico reported.
Arkansas currently bans nearly all abortions without exceptions for rape or incest and only permits the procedure when necessary to save the life of the mother. The state passed an anti-abortion law in 2019 that took effect when the Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturned Roe.

The bill is one of a string of conservative proposals that Sanders has enacted upon assuming office. Since January, she has enacted bans on the use of TikTok on state devices, forbidden the teaching of Critical Race Theory in schools, and barred the use of the term "Latinx" on official forms.
