Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, has thrown his hat in the ring to become the GOP minority whip in the next Congress, Punchbowl News reported.

He will likely face off against Tom Emmer, who currently serves as majority whip.

Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress on Tuesday night, with Democrats notching wins in traditionally Republican battlegrounds like Texas and South Carolina.

The defeats have set off leadership battles that could shape the party's future. House Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek to become minority leader and both Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Majority Leader Steve Scalise are running to succeed him.
