Biden admin 'reviewing' Pompeo's determination that China is committing genocide against Uyghurs
“I think the State Department is reviewing that now because all of the procedures were not followed and I think that they're looking to make sure that they are followed to ensure that that designation is held," Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.
The Biden administration is "reviewing" the determination made earlier this month by then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that China is perpetrating genocide against Uighur Muslims.
"I think the State Department is reviewing that now because all of the procedures were not followed and I think that they're looking to make sure that they are followed to ensure that that designation is held," Biden's nominee for United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday.
Pompeo in a statement issued the day prior to Biden's inauguration as the nation's 46th commander-in-chief said that he had determined that China, "under the direction and control of the CCP, has committed genocide against the predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang. I believe this genocide is ongoing, and that we are witnessing the systematic attempt to destroy Uyghurs by the Chinese party-state," Pompeo said in the statement.
"I haven't actually seen what Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said, so I can't comment on it," Biden's newly confirmed Secretary of State Antony Blinken said to reporters at the State Department on Wednesday, according to the Washington Examiner. "My judgment remains that genocide is [being] committed against the Uyghurs, and that hasn't changed."
