Biden says a 'medical condition' could make him consider dropping reelection bid
He has thus far resisted calls to step aside as the Democratic nominee, however.
President Joe Biden this week indicated that he would consider dropping his reelection bid in the event that he developed a medical condition.
Biden has faced calls to leave the race in the wake of his performance in the CNN presidential debate in which he often appeared lost on stage and stumbled over his words. He has thus far resisted calls to step aside as the Democratic nominee, however.
Asked whether anything would prompt him to reconsider that position, Biden suggested a medical complication could do so.
"If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, 'You got this problem, that problem,'" Biden told BET host Ed Gordon in an interview, according to CNBC.
Barring Biden's voluntary withdrawal from the race, however, there exist few options for frustrated Democrats to remove him as the nominee. Some have started a "Pass the Torch" campaign hoping to persuade him to step aside.
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., on Wednesday became the latest Democratic lawmaker to issue such a plea, saying "[a] second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November."
