Biden touts Newsom during California trip as WH buzz heats up
The governor, for his part, has suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris would be Biden's natural successor.
President Joe Biden offered effusive praise for California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom while at the Asian Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) summit in San Francisco, seemingly hinting at a presidential future for the governor as speculation that he may mount his own White House bid heats up.
Newsom has denied any plans to challenge Biden for the party nomination in 2024, though speculation has abounded that he may become the eventual Democratic nominee, either in 2024 or 2028. Biden's remarks are sure to add to those speculations.
"I want to talk about Gov. Newsom. Want to thank him. He’s been one hell of a governor, man," he said, according to The Hill. "Matter of fact, he could be anything he wants. He could have the job I’m looking for."
Biden is currently seeking reelection to a second term, though it was unclear from his remarks whether he was referencing the position in regards to Newsom.
The governor, for his part, has suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris would be Biden's natural successor, saying "I think the vice president is naturally the one lined up... It's the Biden-Harris administration."
"President Biden is going to run, and we’re looking forward to getting him reelected," he said in September.
