Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks on Thursday announced his retirement, which took effect the same day.

"It's just time. I feel like I got the ship back on course, from the least secure, disastrous, chaotic border, to the most secure border this country has ever seen," he told Fox News. "Time to pass the reins...time to enjoy the family and life."

He further indicated that he planned to return to his Texas ranch.

Banks assumed the role of Border Patrol chief in January of 2025 and oversaw much of the second Trump administration's earlier efforts to deter illegal immigration.

During his tenure, authorities reported a dramatic downturn in illegal border crossings and asylum seekers arriving at the border altogether.

He previously served as a special advisor to the governor of Texas on border issues.
