Canada warns LGBT travelers to U.S. of state laws affecting the group
At least 21 states have enacted laws restricting or outright banning certain minor gender treatments.
The Canadian government on Tuesday issued an advisory to LGBT individuals travelling to the United States warning that several states had embraced laws that may affect members of that demographic.
"Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons. Check relevant state and local laws," the advisory reads. Ottowa still recommends that visitors to the U.S. "take normal security precautions."
The advisory offered no specifics, buts comes amid a litany of state laws barring transgender participation on sports teams that correspond to their gender identity and restricting access to certain gender-related treatments such as hormone therapies or reassignment surgeries.
At least 21 states have enacted laws restricting or outright banning certain minor gender treatments, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a pro-LGBT advocacy organization.
The HRC, as well as Equality Florida, has previously cautioned LGBT travelers against visiting the Sunshine State due to its embrace of such restrictions.
"Because of Ron DeSantis and his frenzied appeal to extremists, LGBTQ+ people in Florida are finding themselves in a state of emergency every single day. Since the day he took office, Governor DeSantis has weaponized his position to weave bigotry, hate, and discrimination into public law for his own political gain," HRC President Kelley Robinson said in May.
