Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday praised President Donald Trump's selection of Kevin Warsh to serve as Federal Reserve chairman, calling him a "fantastic choice" for the role.

Trump announced his choice of Warsh on Friday morning, highlighting that he was the youngest Fed governor in history at the age of 35. Carney, himself an experienced central banker, heaped praise on Warsh.

"Kevin Warsh is a fantastic choice to lead the world’s most important central bank at this crucial time.
Kevin Warsh is the best choice to lead the world’s most important central bank at this pivotal moment," Carney said.

Carney previously served as the governor of the Bank of Canada and later as the governor of the Bank of England before he became the prime minister.

The timeline for Warsh's confirmation remains unclear. Current Chairman Jerome Powell's term is not set to expire until 2028 and Trump's authority to fire him remains ambiguous.

Powell has resisted calls to resign amid Trump's public frustrations with his hesitancy to lower interest rates.
