House Ethics Committee chairman files resolution to expel Congressman Santos
While Santos has ignored previous calls to resign, he did announce that he would not be seeking reelection for his seat.
The House Ethics Committee chairman filed a resolution Friday to expel fellow Republican Congressman George Santos, one day after the panel released a report that found he "blatantly stole from his campaign."
Chairman Rep. Michael Guest, of Mississippi, said in announcing the resolution the report findings about Santos and is spending is "more than sufficient to warrant punishment and the most appropriate punishment is expulsion," according to ABC News.
The 56-page report also found he "deceived donors" and "reported fictitious loans to his political committees to induce donors and party committees to make further contributions to his campaign – and then diverted more campaign money to himself."
Santos has refused to resign since allegations about campaign mis-sending surfaced after winning the New York House seat in November 2022.
However, he said after the report was released that he would not seek 2024 reelection.
Santos pleaded not guilty last month to federal criminal fraud charges including false and incomplete campaign reports and improper use of campaign funds.
