Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Democratic nominee Graham Platner are in a statistical dead heat in the race to represent Maine in the upper chamber of Congress, a recent survey has revealed.

Platner led with 49% support among likely voters in the latest New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena survey. Collins trailed with 47%, while 3% were undecided and less than 0.5% preferred another candidate.

The margin of sampling error of +/- 4.8% means the race is a statistical tie.

Platner's two-point lead represents a considerable drop from his earlier support against Collins, who is seeking a sixth term in the Senate.

Though Platner emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, he suffered from a string of scandals, including a string of contentious Reddit posts and a tattoo of a Nazi totenkopf.

The race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the battle for control of the Senate in November.
