Dem Sen. Warner demands answers from Biden on allegedly mishandled classified documents

Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner expressed concerns on Monday that the Biden administration had refused to offer vital details related to the president's alleged mishandling of classified materials.

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman said the White House's lack of transparency "doesn't pass the smell test" and that lawmakers are displeased with the administration's stonewalling on the matter, according to the Washington Times.

"I’m concerned not only about the documents, but what has been done, if anything, to mitigate" additional incidents, Warner explained. 

"The administration’s position is untenable," he said, per the Times. "If there was a violation made by President Trump, President Biden or Vice President Pence about the mishandling of documents, that ought to be pursued."

Warner's remarks follow revelations that a lawyer for Biden discovered materials marked classified while cleaning out his former office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington last November. Those materials reportedly contained intelligence on Iran, Ukraine, and the UK.

Reports of the discovery prompted Biden aides to sweep his properties for similar document troves, which ultimately turned up multiple batches at his Delaware home.

Facing mounting public pressure, Attorney General Merrick Garland ultimately appointed special counsel Robert Hur to pursue investigations into the Biden matter. Warner expressed hope that the DOJ would get past the administration's stonewalling, saying, "I think this responsibility lies at the Department of Justice... I’m hoping for progress this week. I’m not saying a solution. I’m hoping for progress."
