Biden's top student loan official to leave the admin: Report
Cordray previously served as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and his future plans remain unclear.
The senior official in charge of student loans at the Department of Education will soon leave the administration, Politico reported, citing "two people familiar with the decision."
Richard Cordray was appointed to lead the Officer of Federal Student Aid in May of 2021, an appointment that will soon expire. His tenure has seen the administration attempt to forgive student loan debt through myriad schemes, including an initial effort to cancel $10,000 for nearly all borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.
The Supreme Court blocked that effort last year, prompting the Education Department to press forward with revised initiatives, including an April announcement from President Joe Bien that he would cancel the debt of more than 277,000 borrowers.
Cordray previously served as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and his future plans remain unclear.
