Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed this week challenged President Donald Trump to come to the Wolverine State to rally his supporters, contending that his opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., was merely a surrogate for the president.

El-Sayed and Rogers are locked in a close contest to replace the retiring Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich. The race is considered to be one of the most competitive of the cycle and represents one of the best opportunities for Republicans to gain a Senate seat.

Speaking on MSNOW on Monday, El-Sayed invited Trump to the state to make his case to voters.

"Please, I’m asking you, Come to Michigan,'" he said. "[Y]our candidate can’t speak for himself. He doesn’t have anything to say. Clearly, you are the answer, and you should tell everybody why they should imagine you on the ballot."

Trump has repeatedly urged his supporters to imagine he is on the ballot, rather than the individual Republican candidate.

On Tuesday morning, Trump raged over Fox News hosting El-Sayed for an interview, saying that the network was "promoting the Dumocrats."
