Colorado Secretary of State confirms Trump will be on the ballot in 2024
Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced shortly after the appeal that she will include Trump on the primary ballot on the Jan. 5 certification deadline, unless the higher court decides not to take up the case or rules in agreement with the state.
The Colorado Secretary of State will include former President Donald Trump on the ballot in 2024 as the state's GOP filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced shortly after the appeal that she will include Trump on the primary ballot on the Jan. 5 certification deadline, unless the higher court decides not to take up the case or rules in agreement with the state.
"Donald Trump engaged in insurrection and was disqualified under the Constitution from the Colorado Ballot," Griswold wrote in a press release, according to Fox News.
"The Colorado Supreme Court got it right. This decision is now being appealed," she added. "I urge the U.S. Supreme Court to act quickly given the upcoming presidential primary election."
Earlier this month, the Colorado Supreme Court determined that Trump engaged in an insurrection against the U.S. via the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and was therefore ineligible to appear on the 2024 presidential ballot.
The state's Republican Party on Wednesday appealed its state Supreme Court decision.
“The Colorado Supreme Court has removed the leading Republican candidate from the primary and general ballots, fundamentally changing the course of American democracy,” the party’s lawyers wrote.
“Unless the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision is overturned, any voter will have the power to sue to disqualify any political candidate, in Colorado or in any other jurisdiction that follows its lead," they continued. "This will not only distort the 2024 presidential election but will also mire courts henceforth in political controversies over nebulous accusations of insurrection.”
