Georgia Lt. Governor says GOP is focused on 2024, while Democrats are 'obsessed' with 2020
"They're afraid of Donald Trump winning the primary and being the nominee and more than likely beating Joe Biden in a rematch," Jones said.
Georgia GOP Lieutenant Gov. Burt Jones says that while Democrats are obsessed over the 2020 narrative, Republicans are focusing on the 2024 presidential election.
"The Democrats want to accuse us of being focused on 2020," Jones said on the Thursday edition of the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. But it's the mainstream media and the Democratic Party who are ones who are obsessed with 2020."
"They're afraid of Donald Trump winning the primary and being the nominee and more than likely beating Joe Biden in a rematch," he continued. "And you know, we are trying to focus on 2024."
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has gotten some backlash from some Republicans for rejecting the calls for a special session to investigate or impeach Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the indictments against former President Trump and his 18 co-defendants.
“Up to this point, I have not seen any evidence that DA Willis’ actions, or lack thereof, warrant action by the Prosecuting Attorney Oversight Commission," Kemp said during a press conference last week.
Jones explained that Republicans in Georgia do not have the votes to call a special session.
"We go into session in January," he explained. "In order for us to be able to get into a special session, we have to have a 3/5 majority in both the House and Senate. We just don't have those numbers."
He did add that there were other options on the table regarding Willis.
"But we will have plenty of time to address all options when we're able to get into the January session, because this thing is a year and a half away from seeing the courtroom," Jones said.
