GOP candidates for Michigan governor respond to Whitmer's use of 'menstruating people'
Whitmer's rhetoric is "evidence of a moral collapse in our society," said one candidate.
Michigan Republican candidates trying to unseat incumbent Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer are criticizing her for referring to women as "menstruating people."
Whitmer made the comments during an online event with the state Democratic Party, in response to a question about a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would protect women' access to abortion if the Supreme Court, as expected, rules on a Mississippi abortion case that would effectively overturn Roe v. Wade.
"I have the constitutional ability to bring a lawsuit to protect constitutional rights of people of Michigan," Whitmer responded. "So I brought a lawsuit on behalf of all the menstruating people in Michigan – 2.2 million. And another tool I have is to go straight to our state Supreme Court."
Whitmer's phrasing is part of a continued attempt by progressive members of the Democratic Party trying to position themselves as inclusive of all people who can menstruate and give birth to children.
The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot only if a minimum number of petition signatures required by state law are obtained and certified by the state board of canvassers by July 11.
"Has the left gone insane?," GOP candidate for governor Tudor Dixon told Fox News. "Menstruating people? Drag queens in every school? This is not normal behavior. Someone needs to check the Democratic Party. It's starting to seem like COVID was more like mad cow disease,"
Dixon was referred to a recent statement from Democratic Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who said there should be a "drag queen for every school."
Candidate Ralph Rebandt, a pastor, told Fos that the U.S. Declaration of Independence addresses "the laws of Nature and Nature's God."
Whitmer's rhetoric, he said, is "evidence of a moral collapse in our society."
A spokesperson for Businessman Kevin Rinke, another GOP gubernatorial candidate, said Whitmer's comments demonstrate that she "and her entire administration have shown they are on the extreme, fringe Left when it comes to every issue."
The candidates will compete in the Michigan primary scheduled for August 2.
