The Department of Justice said Tuesday that it will send staff members to Charleston, South Carolina, to monitor the polls in the state's most populous and largest city as voters cast their ballots in the state's Republican Senate primary runoff election.

South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham and Rep. Ralph Norman advanced to the special primary runoff earlier this month. Both are seeking a full term in the upper chamber and are running to represent the Republican Party in the general election in November. 

The DOJ said it is sending four Civil Rights Division attorneys, one South Carolina Assistant U.S. Attorney, and one staff employee with the South Carolina U.S. Attorney’s Office to Charleston.

“South Carolina is the next stop in our ongoing effort to ensure election transparency,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division said. “We appreciate the cooperation of the State of South Carolina, the County of Charleston, and the South Carolina United States Attorney’s Office in helping make this monitoring effort an exemplary one for promoting trust.”

The race comes after the unexpected death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., last month. Gov. Henry McMaster, R-S.C., appointed his sister, Darline Graham, to complete the remainder of his term, but she is now seeking a full term with the support of President Donald Trump.

Norman placed second behind Graham in the initial primary, but has since secured the support of former Rep. Mark Sanford and Mark Lynch, who had challenged Lindsey Graham in the original primary.
