Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from delegates to win the party’s nomination for president

Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from delegates to the Democratic National Convention to win the party’s nomination for president, according to Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison.

The announcement was made during a virtual event with supporters on Friday. The delegates began their voting on Thursday and the process is set to continue through Monday, according to CNN. Harris will be the first black woman and first Asian American to head a major-party ticket.

“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” said Harris, who took part in the virtual event. “I will officially accept your nomination next week, once the virtual voting period is closed.”

“Later this month, we will gather in Chicago, united as one party, where we’re going to have an opportunity to celebrate this historic moment together,” the vice president added.

Harris' team announced Friday that it raised $310 million in July. That began immediately after President Joe Biden announced he was stepping down from the race on July 21. Trump's team said it raised $138.7 million in July. Neither of those figures can be verified until the Federal Election Commission reports for July come out, according to NBC News.
