Los Angeles may join growing list of major US cities led by democratic socialists
Nithya Raman's candidacy has been compared to that of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's, whose campaign drew support from voters dissatisfied with the established political class.
Democratic socialist Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman was showing a considerable lead over incumbent Mayor Karen Bass on Thursday afternoon.
Raman held 52.1% of the vote against Bass' 47.9%, with 76% of the votes counted, according to the Associated Press.
The AP had not yet called the race for Raman, but NBC was declaring her the victor on Thursday.
Raman, 45, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and she is up against Bass, who is a former six-term congresswoman.
Fellow democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George won the mayoral race in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
Should Raman win, she'll join Lewis George, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is a member of the DSA, and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, who identifies as a democratic socialist but is not a member of the DSA.
Raman's candidacy has been compared to that of Mamdani's, whose campaign drew support from voters dissatisfied with the established political class.
