Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass received enough votes Tuesday night to advance to November's General Election but failed to cross the 50% threshold that would have allowed her to outright win a second term.

The Associated Press has announced the Bass will advance, with preliminary tallies showing Republican candidate and reality TV star Spencer Pratt and Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman, a Democrat, in a close contest to become the second candidate to advance to the General Election.

Due to late-arriving mail and drop-off ballot counts, California often sees substantial vote updates after Election Day that can significantly shift outcomes.

In the Los Angeles mayoral race, if no candidate receives at least 51% of the vote in the primary, then the top two candidates face each other in the November general election.
