Nashville officials oppose plan to host 2024 GOP National Convention, likely ending city's bid

Nashville's city council has reportedly rejected a draft agreement to host the 2024 Republican National Convention, likely ending the city's competition with co-finalist Milwaukee to host the event.

GOP Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee and Republicans in the state legislature lobbied hard for Nashville to host the convention. But the city’s Democratic-led Metro Council opposed the plan, according to Fox News.

The conventions are historically a boon for the local economy. The 2016 GOP convention in Cleveland, the party's last all-in-person one because of the pandemic. The estimate total economic impact for Cleveland was a reported $110 million to $188 million. 

Milwaukee approved its draft resolution in June, and two weeks ago the Republican National Committee’s Site Selection Committee – which oversees convention planning – recommended Milwaukee over Nashville. 

The RNC committee is set to make its formal presentation Thursday to the full RNC membership, during its summer meeting in Chicago. The full RNC membership will vote Friday in a public session on the committee's recommendation, Fox also reports.
