Texas Democratic Rep. Colin Allred raised nearly $5 million in the third quarter of this year as part of his Senate bid to unseat Texas GOP Rep. Ted Cruz.

His Senate campaign confirmed on Wednesday that the Democrat had hauled in $4.7 million.

"Beyond grateful for this immense showing of grassroots support [Team Allred] is powered by folks who know we don't have to be embarrassed by our Senator—we can get a new one. Let's keep this momentum going to retire Ted Cruz and bring new leadership to the Senate!" Allred said.

The figure lags behind that of his incumbent Republican opponent, who has said his campaign brought in $5.4 million in the same period, according to The Hill.

While Texas has traditionally been a Republican bastion, but Cruz's narrow reelection victory in 2018 has Democrats eyeing a pickup in what is likely to be an otherwise tough Senate cycle for the party.

Allred has not yet won the Democratic nomination, but stands as the clear favorite for the slot.
