Trump endorses Christine Serrano Glassner in New Jersey's heavily-watched US Senate race
His endorsement comes less than a month before the state is scheduled to hold its Republican Senate primary.
Former President Donald Trump announced he is endorsing Christine Serrano Glassner in her bid to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate amid a heavily-watched race for the seat of incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez.
"She’s a fantastic woman," Trump said about Serrano Glassner, mayor of Mendham Borough, during a New Jersey rally on Saturday. "I’m giving her my complete and total endorsement."
His endorsement comes less than a month before the state is scheduled to hold its Republican Senate primary.
Trump also said Serrano Glassner's GOP opponent Curtis Bashaw is a supporter of New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie, whom Trump has clashed with on multiple occasions.
"I gratefully accept President Trump’s endorsement, and I look forward to serving as his steadfast ally in Washington and working hand-in-hand with him to Drain the Swamp and Make America Great Again," Serrano Glassner said in response to Trump's endorsement. "New Jersey deserves better than the corrupt political establishment that gave us 'Gold Bar Bob' Menendez, and America deserves better than the unmitigated disaster of the Biden regime."
After being indicted on multiple bribery charges, Menendez said in March that he would not seek reelection as a Democrat, but he left open the possibility of running as an independent candidate.
Serrano Glassner, who represents a borough of fewer than 5,000 people, per Census data, is likely to have a tough race this fall against New Jersey U.S. Rep. Andy Kim, the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Kim came in with 47% to Glassner's 38% in a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll last month before Trump made his endorsement.
However, the race will be tighter if Menendez enters as an independent. The same Fairleigh Dickinson poll shows that in a three-way contest, Kim would come in with 45%, Glassner with 39% and Menendez with 7%.
