Trump surges to 7-point lead in battleground state Michigan: poll

The new poll could increase pressure on Biden to resign

A poll of likely Michigan voters shows former President Donald Trump seven points ahead of incumbent President Joe Biden in the state. The lead in a battleground state may intensify calls for Biden to step aside.

"It’s only going to add to the pressure on Biden to step aside and have someone replace him," said Michigan pollster Bernie Porn, according to the Detroit Free Press. Porn is the pollster for EPIC-MRA, which conducted the survey of 600 voters for the Free Press.

Trump leads Biden 49% to 42% in a heads-up poll, with the remaining 9% of survey participants refusing to answer, voting for another candidate, or undecided.

Most of Biden's paths to electoral success run through Michigan. The election-tracking website 270toWin projects that Biden has only three winning state combinations to stay in the White House. Two of those combinations require winning Michigan.

With other candidates included, Trump leads Biden 43% to 36%, with independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. taking 8%. Independent Cornel West and the Green Party's Jill Stein each polled at 2%.

The Free Press reports that "Trump led in every region of the state, including in metro Detroit — defined as Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties and seen as the most predominantly Democratic region in Michigan."
